Between Memory and Stone

Between
Memory
and
Stone

Conference

19 October 2026Musikbrauerei Berlin

Between Memory and Stone brings together researchers, curators, educators, local politicians, lawyers, journalists, and civil society practitioners from Germany, Poland, and Ukraine to rethink how public history can foster pluralistic, value-based cultures of remembrance across borders. Together, we discuss what it means to confront, reinterpret, and transform contested legacies, and how transnational cooperation can help translate historical reflection into civic practice.

Memory
Lab

A one-week international laboratory bringing together researchers, curators, educators, and civil society practitioners from Poland, Ukraine, and Germany to explore how our societies confront, reinterpret, and transform the Soviet legacy that continues to shape public space and collective memory.

Story
Map

A collective outcome of the Between Memory and Stone MemoryLab. This StoryMap is offered as an intellectual and creative laboratory of public history in its own right — an invitation to engage with difficult heritage as a live site of interdisciplinary and cross-border inquiry. In documenting how a new generation of scholars, researchers, artists, and civil society actors from Poland, Ukraine and Germany is working through this inheritance. The projects gathered here are situated interventions, texts, and ideas, each grappling in its own way with the questions that animated the laboratory itself. In times when historical narratives are weaponized through disinformation and nostalgia for totalitarianism, this platform emerges from a shared conviction: that public history can strengthen democratic resilience, cultivate pluralistic, value-based remembrance cultures across borders, and offer a relevant answer to the question of what we can do with this heritage, how we can re-contextualize it.
